Oland Brand grew up as the eight of ten children of the town miller Kiran Brand of Oldford and his wife Tilda. When Oland was six his youngest brother Nikolai was born. As their father had more than enough help from his oldest sons and the house was getting overcrowded, it was decided that young Oland would be sent off to the temple of Marcus in Belmere. Sent off from home at seven, Oland has only seen his family four times in the years since, each time on a personal leave to attend his grandparents' funerals. He harbours no ill feelings towards his family though, and fondly remembers the love and care he was given as a little boy.
Oland early took a keen interest in herbal medicine, and would often assist the seasoned priests in their work as healers. Due to the suffering he has seen in the course of this work, he has developed a somewhat more pragmatic approach to life [neutral good] than many of his fellow priests and paladins.
Oland comes from a home where music and song was commonplace and the most usual form of entertainment. This caused a great bond between the family members, and Oland kept this interest as he joined the temple. Getting practiced at playing the harp, Oland would often perform on this instrment during sermons and ceremonies.
